She Stole My Man!

No she didn't.  Let's be truthful here folks, a man/woman/husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend is not a piece of property that can be stolen.  I think that No Limit Records  artist Mia X said it best in her remake of Salt N Pepa's "I'll Take Your Man."  The words have stuck with me since I first heard the song: "I can't take yo n!**a unless he's ret ta go." Translation: no one can "steal" someone's significant other... that person always goes willingly.

Lately, singer/song writer Alicia Keys has been at the center of this topic.  Now another celebrity has joined her.  Fantasia Barrino, winner of some season of American Idol (I could google her to see which season but let's face it, who really cares) has been dating a married man.  I remember reading articles about her and this man a year ago.  Now, Fanny is recovering from a suicide attempt after divorce papers from the guy's wife make all kinda of allegations for her.  In addition she's being sued, because in her state the wife can sue the mistress.  If you haven't been keeping up with all of this, I'm not going to waste my time updating you because Google works for everybody.

Here's my problem with the situation.  The wife is obviously just in it for money.  Yeah, I'm sure it hurts for your marriage to break up.  Hell it hurts to be cheated on and I know that FIRST hand.  But I think the problem these days is that people don't take that shit up with the person who cheated on them.  You want to fight or sue the other woman, but what about the person who stood before God and made vows to you?  In my mind two things are certain.  Fantasia WAS wrong for knowingly engaging in a relationship with a married man, and something was going on in that marriage that had nothing to do with Fantasia.  If everything was peachy, this wouldn't be a hot topic of conversation.  So now, as a woman scorned, Mrs. Cook wants to sue Fantasia, because she can, and because she has money.  If this had been Keisha down at the Walmart sleeping with her man, she might go snatch her lace front off of her head. But instead, her husband cheated with a famous person, and knowing that working at T-Mobile isn't bringing her husband a huge paycheck, so she's going after Fanny's cash.

All I can say is that Fantasia has really gotten herself in deep shit.  I hope she can learn to better cope with this situation.  You made this happen.  Deal with the consequences.  Aspirin and sleep aids are not the way to solve your problems.  Learn from your mistakes, hire a good lawyer, and move forward.  Besides, you have a new album coming out.  The sales will either be really hurt by the adultery or helped by the suicide attempt.  Either way, there will be concerts, and she needs to get herself together so she can abandon her voice and scream into the mic and kick her shoes off like she's Patti Labelle.

Battle of the Cases...

No one can deny that Otterbox makes tough cell phone cases.  But from the moment I heard about these cases my main thought was "God they are fugly."  I tend to drop stuff, so I want something to protect my phone, but I also want something that looks nice.  So I gave up on ever having an Otterbox.

Case-Mate Hybrid case for the 9700 in Pink/Dark Grey
Then Case-Mate came out with their Hybrid tough cases.  Originally I thought they were pretty boring, but they've come out with many skin and shell color combos that can be ordered separately to mix and match.  I've been considering one of these for a while.  They look like they are a bit bulkier than I'd want but the amount of protection seemed to make it worth it.  I wanted to order the military sand (looks kinda white)/purple combo (and probably a pink skin for those days I'm feeling more pink than purple) but alas, military sand was sold out.  My plan was just to stalk the Case-Mate website until my perfect combo was available.  But things change.

I was browsing some Blackberry theme blogs, when I came across a post about the Otterbox 9700 Commuter Series Strength Case.  I was intrigued and followed the link.  Not only is this an Otterbox case (which means wonderful protection for my beloved Blackberry) but it is cute (moreso than the Case-mate one), pink, and doesn't seem as bulky as the hybrid case.  The icing on the cake is that 10% of the proceeds will be donated to Avon's breast cancer fund.  I signed myself up for the email to let me know when the product is available for purchase, and I will immediately buy and write a review when I receive it. I am super excited about this.  I guess that makes me a nerd but I do love my blackberry.

**EDIT**
Got my email about 10 minutes ago. First thing I did when I got home was make my order. Now I wait.

My next purchase...

...will be a new mp3 player.  Mine is dying on me.  It was a slow death but I'm going to have to pull the plug on the life support soon.  My current player, is very full and has a 30gb capacity, so first requirement is more space.

What I really want is an ipod touch.  Of course the largest capacity I can get is 64mb.  I'd really prefer 80 but that's good for now.

Then comes the next dilemma.  there is talk of a new ipod touch on the horizon.  If I wait until the end of the month I could get some exciting new ipod.  Rumor has it that it will have a front-facing HD camera giving it the same Face Time capabilities of the new iphone4.  That's fine, but I'd have to have someone who had one and none of the people I'd actually want to see while I talk have iphones, so what's the point?  I can update the current one to the new OS and be fine.  Plus the prices on the ones currently for sale have been dropping, and surely a new 64gb ipod touch w/ all these new capabilities would be much more expensive, and the one I'm getting costs enough as it is.  I've already looked in itunes and found a couple of cool apps and games.  One is a flash card app that I can use for school so that's pretty awesome.  Best of all, a new toy to play with.

How Much is that Doggy in the Window?

I've seen a lot this summer and it has left me wondering if people are REALLY as clueless as they seem about the pets they claim to "love" so much!  You research what kind of flat screen tv you want, whether the Wii or Playstation 3 would be a better fit for you, and what kind of car you drive.  But it seems more and more apparent that people do NOT research before buying/adopting a pet.  So I decided to write a little "guide."  I'm not an expert, but I've seen a lot in the last 5 years that I've been working with animals.  Seen many people with the wrong kind of pet, or who didn't realize what a financial commitment buying a pet REALLY is.  So here are my tips:

Shop or Adopt???
This is a subject of debate.  You'll see a lot of folks who say "don't shop, adopt."  I am 100% for buying a dog IF you buy from a responsible breeder and do your research first!  Carlton is a PBGV (Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen- google it).  They have a couple of rescues but it's still a pretty rare breed and finding on isn't necessarily easy.  A good breeder has just as many questions for you as you do for them! They want to know about your experience with pets or their breed, that you have a vet that you will take the pup too, etc.  They perform necessary genetic testing- like certifying hips and eyes, or checking for other diseases that may be common to the breed.  They are willing to let you see where they keep their dogs, and don't breed several different breeds!  And a good breeder is willing to take the pet back from you if for some reason you cannot keep him/her.

NEVER EVER EVER buy from a flea market, or a pet store that SELLS dogs, or even some person who has several different breeds.  Chances are you are dealing with a puppy mill, or someone who gets their puppies from a puppy mill.  Puppy mill dogs are kept in cages their entire lives, having puppy after puppy.  The puppies often have parvo, pneumonia, genetic abnormalities, and are full of parasites such as hook worms, round worms, coccidia, giardia, and fleas, ticks, and mites.  You could very well end up buying a dog for $1,000 and then spend at least that much trying to save it's life. It's also best to avoid "backyard breeders."  That's someone who just kind of decided to get two dogs of the same breed and throw them together so they can make money off of puppies.  Responsible breeders breed for betterment of the breed, not for profit.  By the time they pay for prenatal care for mom, genetic testing and certification, and sometimes even artificial insemination and c-sections, they definitely don't make a substantial profit.  Stay away from puppy mills, flea markets, pet stores, and random people breeding dogs just to make a few bucks.  It's not worth the money or the heartache.

Adoption is definitely good.  Shelters and rescues are overrun with pets that need help.  You can even find purebred dogs sometimes, because of owner surrenders.  Again, you still need to be diligent about doing your research! There are people out there who claim to be rescues, who are hoarders or puppy mill operators who  may have started out with good intentions, rescuing one or two strays with intentions of re-homing them, but letting it all get out of hand.  Keep in mind, however, that a shelter dog is NOT free.  There will surely be an adoption fee.  Dogs in shelters need electricity to keep the climate controlled, water, food, and people to take care of them.  Most will also already be spayed or neutered, given vaccines, hw tested, given dewormers, as well as receiving monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention.  Depending on adoptablility, some will even be treated for things like heartworm disease. Depending on age, puppies will most likely need more boosters until they are of age, but adult dogs are usually good to go! If they haven't already been spayed or neutered, many places offer vouchers, which many local vets accept, to get the procedures done at a discounted price.  You can always search Petfinder.com to look to see what pets are available, or go to a PetSmart on a Saturday.  They have adoptions there with your local rescue groups.

What type of dog should I get?

Your first decision is purebred vs mixed breed.  If you choose to get a purebred that's when you decide whether to go with a breeder, breed rescue, or possibly a shelter.  If you choose a mixed breed, then a shelter/rescue is your safest bet! Don't spend $1500 on a "designer breed."  Why? Because a designer breed is still just a mutt, only one that someone made on purpose, and is charging a ridiculous amount of money for.  I guarantee you can find plenty of labradoodles, poodle mixes, etc in the shelters.

If you've decided you want a purebred, you have to decide what breed.  This is one of the most important decisions you can make when getting a dog. Each breed has different exercise and food requirements, temperments, and even different health issues that are prone to a certain breed.  Many of the toy breed dogs that people love, such as yorkshire terriers, chihuahuas, and miniature pinschers are NOT good with children. Dogs like labradors retrievers are much bigger but generally great with children!  Some dogs will need lots of exercise and others don't need as much.  Some dogs like basset hounds can be couch potatoes while others will always be full of energy and need extra exercise to tire them out for the night.  Some breeds like pit bulls, rottweilers, american bulldogs get a bad rap.  There are mean ones out there, but that's in ANY breed.  They are breeds that should only be owned by an experienced owner, but they can be great family pets.  then there are health issues.  Golden retrievers, basset hounds, labs, cocker spaniels and others tend to have ear infections.  Large dogs like labradors, German shepherds, etc tend to suffer from a painful condition called hip dysplasia as well as arthritis.  The list of health problems differs from breed to breed, and there is no guarantee that each dog will get the disease, but it's one of the things you should research.  Animal Planet has a breed selector on their website.  It's not perfect, but you answer 10 questions and they rate breeds based on your answers.  Check it out here..

What does dog ownership REALLY cost???

1) Medical Care
Puppies get vaccines every 3 weeks until a certain age, depending on when they started.  Generally they get 3 or 4 boosters for distemper/parvo, 1 rabies, and 1 bordetella vaccine.  You should definitely get your pet spayed or neutered.  In tact females can get pyometra- a nasty infection of the uterus which can kill them.  Males can have prostate issues, as well as aggression problems and behavioral issues such as "marking their territory" in your house.  Every dog should also be on a monthly flea/tick control and heart worm prevention (even "inside dogs" haven't you ever been bitten by a mosquito indoors? Mosquitoes transmit heart worms).

You should also think about unexpected expenses.  Illness, broken bones, etc can run up a healthy bill.  Many vets take care credit, but you want to be prepared for the possibility.  Most pets even have to have a dental at some point. This procedure is done under anesthesia and will prevent the spread of bacteria from the mouth to internal organs like the heart and kidneys.

2) Grooming
Every breed needs some type of grooming. Whether it's as simple as weekly brushing and occasional baths or  a dog who requires more frequent brushing and even trims.  Many people who own long haired breeds such as the Shih Tzu opt to keep them in a "puppy cut" to make them easier to maintain.  You may decide to invest in clippers and learn to groom your dog on your own, or just take him to the groomer on a regular basis.  Right now as a broke vet student, I don't have lots of money for grooming, so I trim my dogs up at home, and since I like Beaux shaved now, I bought a set of clippers so that I can remove the hair again when it grows back.  Don't think of grooming as purely cosmetic! It also keeps your pet healthy by preventing painful mats, and allows you to notice if there is any skin irritation that may need to be looked at by your vet.

3) Food
I am the first to admit that I am a FOOD SNOB when it comes to my pets.  My dogs (and future cat) eat Blue Buffalo.  it's an all natural brand that has no corn or wheat, no glutens, no soy, and no artificial preservatives.  I make personal sacrifices to feed this food to them because it is more expensive.  However, i do understand that every one can't afford to feed Blue, which is fine.  But please, for your pet's sake, stay away from Dog Chow, Alpo, Pedigree, Ol Roy (only sold at Walmart), Lil Ceasar's, Mighty Dog, and Beneful.  There's lots of better brands out there.  If you have to shop at Walmart or Target, go for the Iams or Purina One.  Those are the best they have.  At Petsmart there is Purina Proplan, Eukanuba, and a few other brands that are less expensive.  But honestly, go for something like Blue Buffalo some of the other more natural brands.  If you use higher quality foods you feed less of it, you get less poop (everyone loves less dog poop) and often your dog looks better- nicer coat and skin.  Whatever you feed, choose the formula that is right for your pet.  Many foods have large/small breed formulas, as well as diets for sensitive stomachs, skin, older dogs, or pets who need to lose weight.

4) Training
EVERY DOG NEEDS TRAINING.  Let me say that again.  EVERY DOG NEEDS TRAINING. They should be socialized as puppies, but this can still be done if you adopt an adult from a shelter.  Take them to PetSmart (I'd avoid going too many places until a puppy has at least 2 sets of distemper/parvo vaccines), the park, family members' houses.  Expose them to different sounds, delivery trucks, umbrellas, children, men, women, different races (yes they can tell the difference), people in wheel chairs, big dogs, small dogs.  A puppy class is a great way to start learning basic commands, get info on potty training, and start socializing your dog.  PetSmart and Petco both offer training classes but if you don't have one near you, try your local pet store or see if there is a private trainer in your area.  Believe me, a well behaved dog makes for a happier family!   Most of the dogs who are turned in to shelters are brought there because of behavior problems, all of which could be avoided.

5) Pet sitters/boarding
I love to take my dogs with me when I go home for weekends, holidays, and this summer we are here at home.  Sometimes you can't take them everywhere you go.  You may have a friend or family member who loves your dogs and would be willing to watch them for you.  But when that isn't an option there are pet sitters and boarding facilities.  To board your dog they usually have to be caught up on bordetella (kennel cough), distemper/parvo, and rabies (required EVERYWHERE BY LAW) vaccines.  If you ever plan to travel, you will have to make arrangements for your pets.  You can take them with you if they are small, but sometimes the price of the ticket plus the stress isn't worth it.

So these were just a few tips to help people who may want to get a dog.  Think people.  It's a recession.  If you are already struggling to pay your bills, do NOT get a dog.  They are living beings who have needs, and if you can't meet your own you shouldn't try to get another life that needs taking care of... just wait until you are able.

A Quickie...

so I have gained some weight since starting vet school.  Won't say how much. Most of it is from second semester.  I don't like it. I can't fit into some clothes, others don't fit well, and my ankles hurt and the extra weight definitely doesn't help that situation out.

My problem is how do I lose weight?  When God was handing out willpower, I was standing in the "love for sleep" line.  I managed to get up one day last week, and go for a bike ride.  That was my plan since I can't walk/run w/ my ankles.  Also being home for  a few weeks this summer, a gym membership is out of the question. I said I'd take my bike up to the stadium to ride- lots of people go there to walk, run, bike in the morning and evenings.  I put my bike in the car one evening so I could go the next morning... didn't get up. It's been the same every since.

Another problem is just food.  I love it so much!   My recent french toast addiction can be blamed for my current weight gain.  I can't imagine only eating salads and shit.  UGH.  And who in vet school has time to cook real food? I have to grab what I can some times. If I didn't love food so much I'd do what 50 cent did (or is he only 25 Cent these days) to lose weight.  Although I don't want to look like that.  Plus I know that's not healthy.

So maybe, I will be able to get up in the morning and do SOMETHING. Some type of exercise.

My Blackberry App Review

When the great phone swap of 2010 went down (I got a new Blackberry Bold 9700, Mama got a Blackberry Curve 8520 and Daddy took my Blackberry Curve 8900), one of my first thoughts was which programs did I HAVE to have on this new BB and which ones could be left behind.  Here's a little review on some of my favorite apps.  (And let me add, I am no expert, just an addicted BB user, saying what I think about my favorites!)

Social Networking
1) Ubertwitter: In my opinion this is the BEST Twitter app available for Blackberry. I've tried Tiny Tweeter, Seesmic, Twitter for Blackberry, Social Scope, Twitter Berry (which now has a new name), etc.  Uber is about the best it gets!  One of my favorite features which is surprisingly lacking in all the other apps is the fact that Uber highlights @ replies and direct messages within your timeline.  And the "Friend Picker" tool is awesome.  It's hard trying to remember user names.  People change them often and spell them weirdly.  I type in that @ symbol and get a drop down list of all my twitter friends.  It's great for my occasional Follow Friday tweets.

2) Facebook: It's a RIM application. It gets the job done as far as responding to wall posts, uploading pics, changing your status- the FB basics.  If I am on the go and want to update something it's nice to have.  I look forward to some major changes when OS 6.0 comes around.

3) Social Scope: You can only get this app by invitation.  You can go to the website to request one.  I only used it one day.  It integrates facebook, Twitter and other social networking apps like Flicr, etc.  You can choose which ones to add and you can see everything in one screen.  So far it's blah to me.

4) Blackberry Messenger: Of course this is a native BlackBerry app but I love it and just wanted to say that.  I only have a few BBM contacts, and i like it that way. There are some that I talk to pretty often and some I don't talk to often at all but it's a nice option to have.

Media
1) Pandora:  Let's face it.  Pandora is pretty awesome.  Music stations created by you that play music similar to a certain artist, song, or genre that you pick.  Sometimes they throw in a song that makes me do this O_o, but all in all it's pretty awesome.  With this app you don't have to be at your computer to hear your favorite Pandora stations, you can take it with you.

2) iheart radio: I don't have it on my 9700 right now but it is a great app to have.  I don't listen to radio that much, but if I am in the mood, I can listen to my stations from home, or in another town on my phone.  I don't have a radio at all in the house so it is good to have.

3) Shazam: I have needed this app my entire life.  You can use it to "listen" to a song and it tells you artist and title.  That way you can go add them to your iPod or other mp3 player

Other:
1) Weather bug: I tried The Weather Channel app, but what I liked most that's different from TWC's app is that if you roll over the icon, you get some quick weather info.  Current temp, high, and low.  That way I don't have to even open the app to see what current conditions are.  When you open the app, the "home" screen shows current temperature, low and high so far that day, and general weather info like wind and rain.  You can choose to see the forecast, alerts in your area, and even see a radar map.  There are plenty of weather apps out there but Weather bug is what I have used and I like it.

2) Quick Pull:  Let's face it, all technology fails. Blackberries, iPhones, computers.  The battery pull is like the "Ctrl + Alt + Del" on a PC.  It's also good to do a battery pull after installing some 3rd party themes.  When I first got my Bold I swear it took me about 10 minutes to get the battery cover off.  Add to that having to remove my case to get to the battery door, and it's a pain in the ass.  That's where Quick Pull comes in. It's like doing a battery pull-- without doing a battery pull.  Pretty convenient.  There is a free and a paid version, and the paid works just fine for me.

3) Google and Google Maps:  I use Google a lot.  No need to call 411.  just type in what I'm looking for and I can get the number.  Now it even searches your phone too.  Google maps can use my current location to find directions to where I need to go or I can use an address as a starting point.  Now if only they'd start using land marks to give directions.  Take a left at Burger King, drive two blocks and take a right at Walgreens.  Those are MY kind of directions.

4) Capture It : This app takes screen shots of your phone.  I like to show off what different theme I'm using.  (One could also use it to share funny texts, tweets, etc with the world)  I set the app to my left convenience key so that one button click takes a screen shot of whatever is up at the moment.

5) Berry annoying:  A MAJOR berry design flaw is the fact that you cannot turn of the camera's shutter sound.  Some believe it has to do with privacy rights.  People take pcitures of others without their consent, sometimes the person doesn't even now their picture is being taken.  but the idea behind the shutter sound of the berry is that someone can't ignore a picture being taken if they hear that sound.  One might also consider the fact that many people carrying Berries are business men and women who might be trying to take pictures of documents from the workplace- and this sound may make that less likely.  So here comes BerryAnnoying to save the day.  It isn't free, but it's worth it. If I want to take a picture in a quiet setting I can do so.  If I see someone looking a hot mess and want to twitpic it, I can.  Again, just like with Capture it, I set Berry Annoying as a convenience key application.  Press the same button that is default for the camera and the application comes up.  It looks no different than the native camera application.  It merely turns the sound down so low that you can't hear it.  It's an app I'll always have until the design flaw is fixed.

6) Berry Buzz: Prior to OS 5 you couldn't set a Blackberry to vibrate and ring at the same time.  The most you could get was a vibrate before the ringtone.  Now that isn't an issue, but for people with devices still running a 4.6 or 4.7 OS it is nice to have.  My favorite features about Berry Buzz is the LED settings.  That one red blinking light drives me CRAZY!  I love Berry Buzz because I can change my LED to different colors for different reasons.  SMS/MMS: Green.  Email: turquoise.  BBM: Purple.  Calls get a disco light.

Other apps I use regularly:
1) Google and google maps- self explanatory
2) Mobile Banking
3) Youversion's Bible app
4) Sheets to go- I use documents to go all the time on my phone.  With sheets to go I can be more productive on the.  The main excel sheet I have on my phone is a grocery list.  I have it set up to calculate the total I'm spending, including tax. that say if I am starting to go over my limit I can put things back that I don't really need.

What are some of your favorite apps?

Happy Mother's Day!

Just wanted to say Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there, especially MINE!  And also to the dads out there doing it all because you guys do exist and deserve recognition.  Especially since no one hesitates to give a shout out to single mothers on Father's Day.
